According to Premier Mark McGowan, the proposed project, dubbed H2Perth, will be built on 130 hectares of vacant industrial land to be commercially leased from the state government in the Kwinana Strategic Industrial Area and Rockingham Industrial Zone.
The project will be the Woodside’s biggest hydrogen investment in Australia to date, designed to produce low-cost, low-carbon hydrogen-based energy for customers domestically and overseas.
At full potential, H2Perth will produce up to 1500 t of hydrogen per day for export in the form of ammonia and liquid hydrogen.
Woodside chief executive officer Meg O’Neill said H2Perth will be a landmark project, for both Woodside and for the state.
“Woodside has a proud track record as an Australian oil and gas producer and our LNG exports will continue helping Asia to reliably meet its energy needs while reducing greenhouse gas emissions for decades to come,” said O’Neill.
“Now, we intend to use our skills and financial strength to add new energy products and lower-carbon technologies and services to our portfolio, which can be scaled to meet customer demand.”
The first phase of the project will produce mostly blue hydrogen, which still uses some fossil fuels but where the carbon dioxide is captured and stored or offset.
O’Neill said the land in the Kwinana area is ideally located for its close positioning to existing gas, power, water and port infrastructure, as well as skilled local workforce.
H2Perth is one in a number of Woodside’s new energy opportunities, including the proposed renewable hydrogen project in north Tasmania and the collaboration with Heliogen.
