The proposed Sasanof-1 exploration well is in permit WA-519-P, approximately 200 km northwest of Onslow, Western Australia.
The project is scheduled for drilling in the first quarter of 2022 as early as February, and Western Gas has secured the Valaris MS-1 semi-submersible rig to drill the well.
Global Oil & Gas will fund 50 per cent of the drilling costs through a 25 per cent acquisition of shares in Western Gas, as well as 25 per cent economic interest in the Sasanof Prospect.
Western Gas has contacted specialist well engineering and drilling management company AGR Australia to manage the drilling campaign.
Sasanof-1 will be a vertical well, drilled to a total depth of 2,500 m.
It presents a low cost, high impact exploration activity in proven hydrocarbon province.
Global Oil & Gas Director Patric Glovac said the earn-in to the project will gain the company significant exposure to the North West Shelf.
“The low CO2, liquids rich gas potential of Sasanof could represent a key part of Western Australia’s transition to a cleaner energy economy,” he said.
Western Gas Executive Director Will Barker said the company was delighted to have Global Oil & Gas on board to support the drilling campaign.
He said the project “has the potential to be a game-changer for the North West Shelf at a time of declining production and expected gas shortages”.
