A new initiative from the Western Australian Chapter and the local Young Pipeliners Forum committee has been the introduction of the technical evenings to the WA event calendar.
The joint committees have worked together to create an event that provides the opportunity for Young Pipeliners Forum (YPF) and APIA members to catch up over a few drinks, combined with interesting technical presentations provided by senior industry leaders and YPFers.
The November session was sponsored jointly by OSD and PIPEd. The first speakers, David McKenzie and David McKevitt, both from OSD, they spoke about the West Angeles Project that OSD and Monadelphous have undertaken for Rio Tinto. Mr McKenzie, a safety advisor, presented new safety initiatives that have been adopted on the project, including focusing on improving the mental health outcomes for workers in a fly-in, fly-out environment. Mr McKevitt, an environmental advisor, looked at the work done with the local traditional owners to facilitate outstanding outcomes in fauna management along the pipeline right-of-way.
The second session looked at the latest developments and research in the field of carbon capture and storage, and the implications for pipelines. Dr Linda Stalker from the National Geosequestration Laboratory at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation provided some very interesting carbon capture and storage examples that have happened with Australia and around the world to date. It was very interesting to hear that Norway has been using this technology on their projects for 20 years. Dr Stalker also described the testing that has been undertaken at the full-scale test reservoir that is operating near Port Campbell in Victoria.
After the presentation, members and YPFers stuck around to enjoy a few more drinks with the presenters.
