WA Chapter goes agog with Gorgon

Chevron Australia’s General Manager Greater Gorgon Area Colin Beckett addressed the WA Chapter on 10 February 2010, outlining the scope of the Gorgon project and what it will achieve in the future.

Mr Beckett explained that the gas field development, which contains enough gas to supply a city of seven million people for 800 years, is an example of an infrastructure project transforming a state. Approximately 10,000 direct and indirect jobs are associated with the project and it will increase the GDP by $64 million.

Located on Barrow Island, offshore Western Australia, the Gorgon LNG Development will provide gas to Western Australia through the Dampier to Bunbury Natural Gas Pipeline (DBNGP), and boost state exports via LNG shipments to Asia. Three

5 MMt/a LNG trains to be located on the central-east coast of Barrow Island will process the gas. Reservoir carbon dioxide will be removed and reinjected into deep saline reservoirs beneath the island. LNG will then be shipped to international markets while compressed domestic gas would be delivered via a 90 km subsea pipeline to the Western Australian mainland, interconnecting with the DBNGP.

Barrow Island is a Class A nature reserve and is the habitat of several endangered animals. Mr Beckett said that this poses a challenge for the project’s development. Quarantine for people and equipment associated with the site is imperative and a maximum of 3,000 people are allowed onsite at the one time. Specially designed camp facilities have been constructed for the project.

Major construction activity is expected to commence in the second half of 2010, with construction of the project expected to take five years. First gas is due in 2014.
