Victoria’s new desalination plant will be capable of delivering a secure source of water to Melbourne, Geelong and some regional communities.
Once the group had been introduced, the 25 young pipeliners hopped on a bus – provided by Sargent – to see the project with their own eyes.
The desalination plant will be connected to Melbourne and regional water networks via an 84 km,
1.9 m diameter transfer pipeline, which is currently being constructed by the Thiess Degrémont Nacap
Joint Venture.
On the way to the plant site, the group stopped over at the Bass River, one of 16 water crossings on the project. They were able to view the pipe jacking process, which involves digging a vertical shaft either side of the river and using an underground boring machine to push pipe through the ground with minimal surface disruptions.
Special thanks go to sponsors – Brooke Bishop and Grant Harrison of Sargent, Matthew O’Connell from Nacap, and Danielle Gardner, Graeme Tait and Stacy Pipikos from the joint venture partners.
