The Tasmanian Government has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Flanders in Northern Belgium, to support cooperation on green hydrogen development.
Tasmania’s Minister for Energy and Emissions Reduction Guy Barnett announced on 3 February that both states had signed an agreement, marking the first hydrogen MOU to be signed by Flanders.
Following the trend in Northern Europe, Flanders is pursuing a decarbonisation agenda to move towards the renewable energy source inline with Tasmania’s target to become a significant exporter from 2030.
Tasmania and Flanders are also in conversation over the use of green hydrogen in aquaculture operations and offshore energy systems as well as in the shipping sector.
Research institutions from both sides are currently meeting over workshops to identify further avenues for potential collaboration.
This most recent agreement follows the MOU signed with the Port of Rotterdam in December 2021 to investigate the feasibility of future exports between Bell Bay and the Port.
Tasmania’s Renewable Hydrogen Action Plan sets out the state’s vision to become a leader in large scale hydrogen production to meet domestic and international demand.
