Mr Gaykema provided an overview of the work involved in generating a standard and taking it through the various stages of the review process. He also explained why Australian standards reflect a consensus of opinion more than those from other countries, and therefore demand stronger protocols and self-regulation within the pipeline industry.
In addressing how YPFers could get involved, Mr Gaykema championed the benefits of reading, challenging and questioning the standard to increase a personal knowledge base. He also suggested joining the standard’s committee as a way of contributing to the industry and developing relationships with like-minded peers.
In closing, Mr Gaykema encouraged YPFers to get the most out of working in the pipeline industry, using his own experience to demonstrate that a blend of motivation, drive and passion for the work can lead to a fulfilling career and opportunities for progression.
A big thank you to Mr Gaykema for taking the time to speak to the YPF, it was appreciated by all who attended.
