The WCRW involves constructing a 200 km network of pipelines to link six existing wastewater treatment plants in Brisbane and Ipswich to three new Advanced Water Treatment Plants. After further filtration, the purified recycled water will be piped to industry, agriculture and power stations and used to supplement drinking supplies.
The Eastern Pipeline component of the project is being delivered by the Queensland Government’s Department of Infrastructure through a project alliance of AJ Lucas, Transfield Services, GHD, SunWater and McCalls. Construction began in March 2007 and is due for completion by December 2008.
The pipeline route extends through existing asset corridors including high voltage and oil and gas transmission easements. The project is approximately 105 km of predominately 1,086 mm rubber ring jointed MSCL pipe.
The cathodic protection package provided by Savcor includes site investigation, detailed design for cathodic protection and high voltage mitigation together with the supply and installation of specialised materials. Upon completion of construction, Savcor will also provide coating defect survey (DCVG), termination and commissioning of the system in accordance with AS2832 and AS4853.
The detailed design includes allowances for interaction with existing foreign structures within the pipeline easement and high voltage transmission lines. Savcor has provided a design package that includes mitigation of low frequency induction and earth potential rise to ensure operator safety. This includes the use of lockable glass reinforced polyester test locations, dedicated earthing through Savcor AE-137 solid state surge diverters and equipotential zones for all accessible pipework and test locations.
As the pipeline route crosses several critical transportation routes, cased crossings were installed and casing spacers were required to provide support and isolation to the carrier pipe. Savcor provided these critical path items designed to suit the different pipeline and casing diameters.
By combining in-house corrosion expertise, extensive experience and state-of-the-art corrosion control products and systems, Savcor has the proven capability to manage this large and complex project to deliver the most cost effective and technically sound solution to its customer.
