Using environmentally-friendly production methods and technology based on sustainable development principles, Savcor has developed a variety of product solutions for the protection and remediation of steel and concrete structures. These include electrochemical corrosion prevention products which assist in extending the life of pipelines by minimising degradation with minimum ongoing maintenance.
Savcor supplies corrosion monitoring systems to obtain and analyse corrosion data vital for pipeline integrity management planning. These systems are designed to withstand harsh environments and extreme temperature and pressure conditions. The newest technology in this area is online corrosion monitoring systems. Savcor is a distributor for Rohrback Cosasco Systems (RCS), which can provide continuous corrosion history from multiple remote probe locations with minimal labour requirements.
Savcor National Products Manager Vinay Swaroop believes that, although it will take a while for asset owners to build confidence in the new technology, online corrosion monitoring systems will prove to be a key development in the sector, with large companies such as BP, Caltex, Chevron, Esso and Shell already incorporating them into their operations.
Another of Savcor’s specialities is cathodic protection (CP) systems. CP systems are installed during the initial construction of a structure to prevent corrosion and to maximise the asset’s life. Mr Swaroop says that this is important for reducing pipeline maintenance costs as pipelines are exposed to an aggressive, corrosive environment when buried in soil.
Savcor’s CP systems have been used on various large Australian infrastructure projects including the Brooklyn to Larra Looping in 2008, part of APA Group’s Victorian Transmission System. Savcor carried out the CP and library-level fault injector/fault current mitigation design for the pipeline, as well as the supply and installation of all components of the temporary sacrificial anode system and the permanent impressed current CP system. The permanent anode groundbed, which was installed halfway along the pipeline, was designed to provide full protection for a minimum of 30 years.
Savcor also supplies other products for ongoing pipeline maintenance and emergency repairs such as the Clockspring system, which can mend corrosion defects with up to 80 per cent metal loss as well as mechanical and third party damage without any welding or hot work. This product is well respected by pipeline owners who are familiar with its ability to withstand extremely high temperatures. Designed for a working life of over 50 years, the economic and easily installed repair solution is used and approved by over
60 countries.
