Romea adopts distance learning traineeships

Romea Training is systematically transforming its vast collection of paper-based learning resources – course notes, written assessments, activities, practical assessments – into an online e-learning management platform. The project has been underway for over 12 months and clients are starting to take advantage of its benefits. Training and assessment has been standardised for all employees in an organisation.

“My clients ask me, how can you sign someone off in a nationally-accredited qualification remotely? Don’t you need to witness them completing tasks?” Managing Director of Romea Training Leng Saw said.

“Of course you do! You can’t remotely assess someone in a practical activity but you can be selective about how much face-to-face site work is actually needed. One of the greatest challenges we face as a training service provider in an industry that is spread across vast distances is to offer a value-for-money service without compromising on quality. Domestic travel costs in Australia remain one of our biggest barriers to offering our services nationally.

“Our customers are very cost-conscious and expect the very best in training. The only way we can be cost-competitive and meet our customer needs is to be innovative and be attuned to the current economic climate.”

As such, Romea Training has adopted the following training and assessment strategies:

* Online e-learning;
* Workplace coaching program;
* Recognition of Prior Learning based on workplace evidence;
* Gap learning programs;
* Consolidation and integration learning; and,
* Traineeship funding management.

The workplace coaching program

Workplace coaches contribute significantly to the success of distance learning. Romea Training, as a Registered Training Organisation, formally enlists the aid of client subject matter experts as endorsed workplace coaches. These client employees act as an agent for Romea and do not have to be qualified workplace assessors. The workplace coaches use Romea Training’s assessment documents to witness and collect workplace evidence that is used to support attainment of competencies.

Not only are clients making the best use of in-house resources to offset costs, experienced and knowledgeable employees are being recognised for their contribution to their companies.

Adopting this strategy, Romea Training assessors need only visit the site once every 6-12 months. These site visits are used to conduct consolidation and integration sessions to augment e-learning and to conduct closeout assessments that support the workplace coaching scheme.

“This way, for each trainee, we have distilled a potential 80 hours of workplace assessment down to about 16 hours over a two-year period for a Certificate III in the Gas Transmission (PMA) or Gas Distribution (UEG),” Mr Saw said.

Romea Training currently has over 50 traineeships signed up across Australia and this number is steadily growing. Romea Training will assist and manage client application for traineeship funding.

Meanwhile, the company has recently executed a Memorandum of Understanding to provide training with EE-Oz in the gas networks industry.
