While the development of SureBondâ„¢100 initially was to provide an improved bond between the linepipe and field joint coating, the solution has proven it can offer a host of additional advantages over traditional legacy products, such as dual-layer fusion bond epoxy (DLFBE).
SureBond™100 consists of a 250 µm thick fusion bond epoxy (FBE) primer and a minimum 1.4 mm thick of reactive and reinforced polyolefin polymer topcoat.
The bonding process between the reactive topcoat and the FBE primer is very similar to that between the abrasion-resistant overcoat topcoat and the FBE primer for a DLFBE system.
At extrusion, cross-linking reactions take place not only within the FBE primer and the topcoat itself, but also between the reactive groups of the topcoat and FBE reactive sites, creating the perfect condition for strong chemical interaction and bonding.
Once the coating is complete, the bonds between the FBE primer and the topcoat of the new coating system are extremely difficult to be broken, making peel resistance testing at room temperature virtually impossible.
The novel approach of incorporating polar structural and cross-linkable reactive groups into SureBondâ„¢100 also result in a higher surface energy of the coating film than polyethylene and polypropylene.
The higher surface energy and reactive groups makes the new coating system behave very similarly to FBE and DLFBE in terms of field joint coating compatibility.
The new coating system is fully compatible with and able to bond strongly to a wide variety of available field joint coating options.
This approach unlocks new integrity levels across the field joint sections, a notorious hassle for pipeline operators concerned about long-term pipeline performance.
SureBond™100 demonstrates its performance when tested for flexibility and impact resistance, with the topcoat passing ISO 2.5 ppd bending at -70°C, unmatched in the industry.
SureBondâ„¢100 passed holiday (void) detection after Hevicote impinged concrete was applied on top of the system, and is thus qualified for applications under concrete weight coatings.
SureBondâ„¢100 performed significantly better than DLFBE in a recent 50 m dragging test performed on a gravel road, representative of field conditions. SureBond coated pipes used were also two times heavier than the DLFPE.
Bredero Shaw has completed all trials and qualifications to offer SureBondâ„¢100 at both the Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates and Kuantan, Malaysia facilities; SureBondâ„¢100 is therefore now available for our Middle East and Asia Pacific customers.
SureBondâ„¢100 complies with major industry standards such as CSA or ISO 21809 sec 1.
