Undoubtedly, the biggest event of the year so far, has been the Young Peoples Forum – an excellent idea that became a superb event. I was honoured to open the Forum and more than impressed by the presentations delivered by our “˜new generation’ of pipeliners. Of course, these were complemented by presentations from some of our “˜more experienced’ members.
The presentations at the Forum showcased the range of careers and opportunities available in this dynamic industry which include engineering, environmental or project management, safety, administration, economics and, of course, important trades skills. Two valued presenters, Ted Metcalfe and Andy Lukas, provided an inspirational overview of the industry and their broad and extensive experiences over many years were sure to inspire our younger attendees. The Friday night dinner and the Saturday “˜interactive debate’ were well attended and many ideas that ensued will be followed up by the APIA Secretariat and the next phase of YPF. Well done everyone!
I would like to use this opportunity to personally thank our members – whose support was instrumental to the Forum’s success – with 82 attendees over two days. Clearly, members see the benefit of knowledge sharing, which encourages younger colleagues to gain more industry experience.
I am pleased to report that the Brisbane Seminar was also a huge success. The event covered challenging topics with the Secretariat, ensuring a full and frank debate. This function worked to engender greater understanding between various sectors of the industry and provided a forum to air mutual challenges and frustrations. It was also rewarding for me to be part of the seminar panel, which wrapped up the day’s events.
In Melbourne, the Federal Minister for Workplace Relations the Hon Kevin Andrews, delivered an address on the new WorkChoice legislation, which generated much debate; guests seemed to appreciate his grasp of industry issues and the relevance of his comments.
Another must-attend member event is, of course, our Annual Convention and Exhibition at Alice Springs in October. Make sure you get your bookings in early so you don’t miss the early bird prices. I’m looking forward to visiting this historical site and experiencing true outback Australia!
In the meantime, the APIA Secretariat continues its diligent work with the Regulatory Affairs Committee on the Government’s new energy legislation. This work highlights the need for APIA to continue to provide carefully considered feedback to Government and legislators alike. In doing this, we can help to ensure that the contributions of the pipeline industry are recognised and that we remain influential in final outcomes.
Finally, the APIA Secretariat and the Board are currently finalising their review of the Strategic Plan, which is scheduled for release at the October Convention.
