POG seminar examines fire threat

This year would have marked the 18th year of APGA’s POG Seminar; however, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the association has been delivering the content to its members via a weekly webinar, with this week marking its fourth instalment.

The webinar contained a presentation from Jemena Manager Network Operations Phil Colvin who discussed the company’s response to the 2019-20 bushfire event, before Jemena General Manager Asset Management and Gas Markets Sean Ward discussed underground peat fires and the associated risks.

Following such a damaging bush fire season, the important information presented and shared in the webinar was indicative of why the POG gatherings are such a vital tool for APGA members.

In his presentation, Mr Colvin said Jemena’s emergency management framework allowed staff to properly respond to the scenarios that occurred during the fires.

“At times we were dealing with multiple fires across a wide range of our operations, and for a period in early January actually had two emergency teams running concurrently – one in New South Wales, one in Victoria,” he said.

“One of the commendable aspects [of our industry] is our people and the way they come together during an emergency when they really need to step up.”

APGA’s POG webinar series continues Wednesday 20 May.
