The Pluto-Karratha Gas Plant Interconnector project has been completed on budget and ahead of schedule, Australian Gas Infrastructure Group Group (AGIG) announces.
There were a number of challenges faced during the project, including navigating the cultural and historical significance of the location, as well as the impact of COVID-19 border closures. Although delays were expected, the AGIG attributed its timely delivery of the project to “an excellent example of teamwork and partnering with [its] customer”.
The project commenced in March 2022, and involved installing a 3.3 kilometre, 30-inch pipeline to the existing Dampier to Bunbury Natural Gas Pipeline (DBNGP) corridor along the Burrup Peninsula in Western Australia.
The pipeline will form part of Woodside Energy’s North West Shelf project. It will transport gas from Pluto LNG, which processes gas from the offshore Pluto and Xena fields, to the Karratha Gas Plant (KGP).
The Interconnector will optimise both facilities’ production. Should KGP have excess capacity, the Pluto-KGP Interconnector will allow for increased gas transport. It will also accelerate the development of any other offshore Pluto gas reserves in future.
According to Woodside, the Interconnector’s route was specifically designed to avoid disturbing protected heritage sites and is not expected to increase net emissions from the company’s facilities.
