NT announces $150m pipeline project

Mr Mills said the NT’s construction sector needs major projects to come to fruition quickly during the post-COVID recession, and the pipeline is exactly what is needed to secure water supply throughout the next two decades.

“The feasibility has been done on the interconnect and technology through an upgrade of the Darwin Water Treatment plan means this important project could deliver safe drinking water while still allowing recreation use of Manton Dam,” said Mr Mills.

“It’s a win-win project worth about $150 million that would deliver local jobs.

“This building of the interconnect would be a significant infrastructure project that will boost the Territory economy and one that can attract federal infrastructure funding.

“It is estimated up to 1000 jobs could be generated across the course of the project.

“It would also become Darwin’s secondary source of reticulated water – easing pressure on the water reserves in the McMinn-Howard East bore fields.”

Additionally, Mr Mills said Territory Alliance will ensure PowerWater continues its community service obligations access to safe drinking water and does not underestimate the importance of this to Central Australian communities.

“In our experience, where there is political will and focus, we can be innovative with new technology and find solutions. This will be a clear task we set in government.”
