Nexxis develops a range of remote visual pipe inspection cameras and last Friday the company launched the first fully design-approved EX-rated robotic camera inspection device.

The Magneto-EX has been unveiled ahead of its 2022 commercial release date as the first system to be developed that is suitable for use in hazardous area inspections.

Nexxis Managing Director Jason De Silviera said Magneto-EX is a game changer not only for the oil and gas sector, but for any industry where there is need for hazardous or confined space inspections.

“Whether it’s operating at heights, deep underground or in the presence of toxic chemicals, industrial worksites are dangerous places, and confined spaces pose the biggest risk in terms of death or injury,” said Mr De Silveira.

“Anything that can be done to keep humans out of these environments is a great step forward.”

Previously, robotic inspection of confined and hazardous spaces has not been possible due risk of ignition, but with approved EX-certification, the prototype can work safely in the most extreme conditions.

The spider-like device has magnetic feet and stable navigation with the ability to configure its body to negotiate complex geometry and narrow apertures.

Western Australia’ Minister for Innovation and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) Don Punch said Nexxis was a prime example of globally significant innovation and technological expertise could be found in WA.

“Nexxis is helping to position Australia as a world-leader in automated robotic inspection research and manufacturing,” Minister Punch said.

Magneto-EX has been developed with the financial assistance and industry support of NERA as well as CSIRO’s Data61 and SixDe.
