New deep gas drilling rig to provide safety, efficiency and mobility

The unique rig design will significantly improve operational safety, reliability and efficiency within the onshore oil and gas industry.

Designed and constructed by The Huisman Group, the rig is known as the LOC-400. It is a 360 metric tonne low operating cost (LOC) onshore unit capable of drilling to a 5,000 m vertical depth.

Several LOC rigs are currently operating in the shale gas and tight gas markets in North America through Innodrill, a wholly owned subsidiary of The Huisman Group.

The rig is specifically designed to increase safety and reduce the cost of exploration and appraisal wells in the unconventional gas market.

Some of its features include:

  • Automated pipe management – significantly reducing manning levels and operational health and safety risks;
  • Small footprint – reducing civil, site and infrastructure works and lowering the environmental impact; and,
  • Reliable power management – main power consumers driven by AC induction motors and managed by a power line communication network.

The rig is currently undergoing minor modifications and final factory commissioning as required to achieve full Australian compliance. It will be arriving in Perth mid-May 2013.

The rig will commence formal drilling operations for Advanced Energy Services clients in June and will be set up in Perth for final field commissioning prior to mobilisation.
