Lightning Fabrications supplies water bath heaters for NQGP

Lightning Fabrications has again been successful, supplying its water bath heaters to the North Queensland Gas Pipeline (NQGP). Lightning Fabrications designed and supplied two 1.4 MW water bath heaters positioned on the NQGP at the gas reception stations at Yabulu and Stuart. Each unit weighed over 40 tonnes, rising to over 100 tonnes after the introduction of water into the heaters.

These units are designed to heat natural gas in the pipeline at 15 MPa line pressure before the gas reaches the pressure reduction stations.

Lightning Fabrications Managing Director Ron Major said all coils in the heaters are 100 per cent radiographed and in compliance with the relevant Australian Standards.

Mr Major also said that the Burner Design and Control philosophy was again compliant with the standard AGA 501.

The design for the heaters saw the incorporation of a number of special features requested by the NQGP Alliance in order to improve the overall system reliability, and the precision of control of the contract exit temperature from the station.

Fortunately, Lightning Fabrications has always been flexible in their heater designs. This has enabled them to add the features which involved duplicating the fuel gas supply and burner systems as well as interlock switching systems and control panels, ensuring complete redundancy. With these modifications if one system fails, the heater automatically switches across to the other.

“Lightning Fabrications is proud to have been involved in the North Queensland Gas Pipeline project. I’d especially like to thank all of our staff who show continual dedication to ensuring that we meet and exceed the expectations of our clients,” Mr Major said.

Besides supplying the heaters for the NQGP, Lightning Fabrications also engineered, fabricated and certified the Custody Transfer Orifice Metering that runs both at the reception stations and at the Compressor Station at the start of the pipeline.

The heaters at work on the NQGP join the other 83 heaters Lightning Fabrications has operating around all states and territories in Australia. Lightning Fabrications’ water bath heaters are available in a range of configurations and performance, with firing rates from 50 MJ/hr to 50,000 MJ/hr using natural draft, forced draft and submerged burner technology.

Other projects Lightning Fabrications has supplied water bath heaters for include the Bell Bay Power Station in Tasmania, the BHP Hot Briquette Iron Plant in Port Hedland, Western Australia, the Loy Yang B Power Station in Victoria and the SEA Gas Pipeline in Victoria.

Lightning Fabrications also manufactures heat exchangers, gas filtration units, skid based process plant, metering stations and pressure vessels.
