Jemena’s green hydrogen now available to NSW

Jemena has announced that green hydrogen is now available for New South Wales homes, businesses and transport industries from its state-of-the-art facility.

The 100 per cent renewable hydrogen generated with solar, wind power and recycled water, is being blended and stored in Jemena’s gas distribution network.

Jemena’s managing director Frank Tudor said the hub was a “living laboratory” that demonstrates how the systems and technologies required to produce and store green hydrogen in existing networks could work at scale.

“By blending it into our gas distribution network we are driving the transition to a low-carbon future by providing cleaner energy solutions to our New South Wales customers,” Tudor said.

The project is expected to reach 23,500 residents, as well as 100 commercial and seven industrial customers.

Transport will also use green hydrogen by early 2022 through an agreement with Coregas, a gas supply company.

Tudor said this was the “first step” towards decarbonisation for the Jemena Gas Network.

“As more renewable gases become available, we will continue to increase the amount of renewably generated gases blended into the network over time,” he said.

“This will ensure our gas network plays its role in enabling the New South Wales and Australian Governments to achieve net-zero by 2050.”

Jemena is currently investing more than $30 million in partnership with the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) on various renewable gas projects.

Notably, the company has partnered with Sydney Water and ARENA on a $14 m biomethane project, which plans to deliver gas to customers by 2022.

Hydrogen-ready gas infrastructure in Bradfield city centre is also under development by Jemena near Sydney’s second international airport.
