According to Reuters, Trudeau’s Liberal government purchased the Trans Mountain crude pipeline that runs from Alberta to the Pacific province of British Columbia last year.
The purchase, valued at CA$4.5 billion (US$3.4 billion), aimed to ensure that the planned expansion would proceed.
Many environmentalist groups and indigenous opposition launched challenges against the project, causing years of regulatory delays that have created a standstill for the pipeline and resulted in billions of investment dollars and thousands of jobs.
Yet, despite the hesitations, Trudeau has expressed his commitment to follow through.
“We will be continuing with the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion,” said Mr Trudeau.
Reuters stated that the pipeline expansion is widely expected to increase Canadian crude exports, with supporters speculating the expansion will revitalise the struggling oil and gas sector by tripling crude volumes moving from Alberta to the British Columbia coast.
