The project is an expansion of the existing 1,150 km crude oil pipeline that runs between Strathona County, Alberta and Burnaby, British Columbia, increasing its capacity from 300,000 to 890,000 bbl/d.
In its latest project update, Trans Mountain said work sites were active at all phases of construction, while construction contractors are still following all advice from governments and health officials in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Worksites for 13 trenchless crossings in the Greater Edmonton area are currently being prepared, with crews clearing and grading entry and exit portals and performing utility relocates for existing underground infrastructure.
The crossings will allow the pipeline to safely travel beneath railways, highways, major roads, watercourse crossing, urban areas and sensitive environmental regions.
SA Energy Group is Trans Mountain’s pipeline contractor in Greater Edmonton, while Midwest Pipelines is completing works in the Yellowhead region.
The project will cost approximately CA$7.4 billion (US$5.7 billion) and it’s been estimated that it will generate around 15,000 jobs per year during construction.
