The course – organised by Clarion Technical Conferences and Tiratsoo Technical, a division of Great Southern Press – is a formal introduction to pipeline engineering, designed to educate staff in the pipeline industry that have not received pipeline engineering training or have only been exposed to specialised areas of the industry.
Professionals suited to this include those working in pipeline related engineering, pipeline designers, project management, contractors, supervisors, inspectors, operators, equipment supply, and inspection and quality management.
The program
Day 1
Topics include: oil and gas, and pipelines; pipeline parameters; pipeline failures; pipeline materials – carbon steel; pipeline materials – sour service; and pipeline materials – corrosion resistance.
Day 2
Topics include: pipeline design; pipeline bends, crossings and protection; pipeline welding and internal corrosion.
Day 3
Topics include: inspection for internal corrosion; monitoring for internal corrosion; pipeline hydraulics, pipeline routeing; pipeline design exercise; pipeline construction; and pipeline testing.
Day 4
Topics include: pipeline operations, inspection and surveillance; pipeline inspection using smart pigs; pipeline repair; integrity management; facilities – equipment, leak detection; and facilities – SCADA, facilities design.
Day 5
Topics include: preventing external corrosion; and cathodic protection systems and monitoring.
Instructors
The instructors for the courses are three well-regarded professionals: Dr Phil Hopkins, Dr Roger King and Pipeline Knowledge and Development President Tom Miesner.
Dr Hopkins has more than 35 years of experience and has worked with companies around the world, providing consultancy on management, business, design, maintenance, inspection, risk analysis and safety, and failure investigations.
Dr King has more than 30 years of experience in corrosion in the oil and gas, civil and nuclear industries, specialising in sweet and sour corrosion, monitoring of corrosion, microbiological corrosion and the design of cathodic protection systems.
Mr Miesner has valuable experience in improving the safety, supply reliability, and efficiency of the pipeline industry; he spent 25 years with Conoco Pipe Line Company in engineering, operations, joint-venture, business development and executive positions, and has worked extensively with the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) in areas of liquid pipeline rate matters.
