It now means that T J Brent Ltd, part of May Gurney Integrated Services plc, is becoming one of the key long-term contractors in National Grid Transco’s 30-year investment programme to upgrade the gas pipeline system in the UK’s North West. Key to the company’s rapid success is said to be its knowledge of how to organize street works, following its wide experience with water industry mains’ renewal and rehabilitation.
“The reality is, with mains’ replacement work for all utilities, you have to approach street works in the correct fashion,” said Doug Robson, regional utilities director at Brent. “We have expertise in managing street works, and this was one of the strengths we brought to the market. Although there are subtle differences between working with water and gas, the skills for entrenchment work are the same,” he added.
May Gurney acquired utility specialist TJ Brent in June, creating a å£330-million turnover company with a forward order book approaching å£1 billion. Currently, Brent has a three-year framework contract with Transco.
