Stage two welding begins on ESO Pipeline

The first phase of the second section of the ESO project will involve the construction of eight pumping stations with a total oil storage capacity of 300,000 cm. The storage capacity of stations at Skovorodino and Kozmino will later be expanded to hold an additional 150,000 cm.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin opened the first stage of the ESO Pipeline at a ceremony held at the port of Kozmino in December 2009. The first stage of the pipeline runs 2,757 km from Taishet, Irskutsk Region, via Yakutia to Skovorodino in the Amur Region.

The second stage of the ESO will run 2,100 km from Skovoridino to the Pacific coast. Currently the oil is transported by rail from Skovoridino to the port of Kizmino on the Pacific coast.

Upon completion of the second stage in 2014-15, the ESO Pipeline will traverse 4,857 km and carry 50 MMt/a of oil.
