Nord Stream prepares for munitions clearance in Baltic Sea

Safe installation and operation of the pipeline system requires clearance of 28 munitions located in the pipeline’s security corridor.

Engineering analysis completed by Saipem Energy Services and verified by Det Norske Veritas indicated that a mine free security corridor of 25 m either side of the pipeline was necessary to ensure its integrity.

Of the 28 unexploded ordnance, 27 lie in Finnish waters and one in Swedish waters. Nord Stream has said that each munitions clearance will be planned separately, taking into account its specific characteristics.

Nord Stream developed its munitions clearance plan in close consultation with the responsible authorities and are supported by the Swedish, Finnish and Danish navies.
