The 24-in diameter, 107-km long gas pipeline will supply gas from the Addax offshore platform to the 561-MW gas power plant being built at Ikot Nyong, near Calabar in Cross River State.
The pipeline is expected to be completed within 15 months, and is one of the projects under the NIPP which is aimed at building seven new power plants and over 1,000km of gas transmission pipelines and several distribution projects all over the country. The bidding process for the Calabar-Adanga gas pipeline project commenced in 2005 with the prequalification process, while the technical and commercial bid took place last year: 11 firms prequalified for the project.
There are three current gas projects being carried out as part of the NIPP. The first is the 18-in, 2-km long, link from the Escravos-Lagos pipeline system to the Ihorbor gas power plant. In the second project, two pipelines will be constructed to feed power plants at Gbarain Ubie and Egbema in Bayelsa and Imo States, respectively. The Egbema pipeline will be 18in diameter and 30km long, while the 18-in line to Gbarain Ubie will be 1km long. The third project combines the three phases of the Calabar-Adanga pipeline: phases one and two are onshore pipelines to take gas from the Shell and Addax facilities, while the third will transport gas from the Addax offshore facility at Adanga.
