Medgaz to start building Algeria gas pipeline

The pipeline will ship gas produced in Algeria’s Hassi R’Mel field from a terminal at Beni Saf on the Algerian coast to Almeria.

The Medgaz consortium includes Endesa, Cepsa, and Iberdrola from Spain, Gaz de France, and Algeria’s state-owned oil and gas company Sonatrach.

With an initial capacity of 8bn cum/yr, the pipeline will cross the Mediterranean in water depths up to 2160m. In Algeria, it will hook up to the Hassi R’Mel-Beni Saf gas pipeline operated by Sonatrach, while in Spain, it will link up with the AlmerÌ_a-Albacete gas pipeline belonging to ENAGAS, which will facilitate its connection to the Spanish and European gas grid.
