The pipeline is designed to boost exports to Turkey and Europe from the western region of the country by transporting sweet gas produced from Iran’s South Pars field.
However, the final pipeline route has yet to be confirmed. “The Pars pipeline will go from Turkey to Greece, through Italy and on to other European countries. Another route could go through Iraq and Syria and then go through the Mediterranean to Greece and Italy,” said Iranian embassy Chief of Economic Affairs Ahmad Noorani.
Turkey already owns a gas pipeline through which it imports 28 MMcm/d of gas from the South Pars gas field and plans to produce a further 20.4 Bcm/a of gas from the field and export it over Iranian territory.
