The oil is transported by a 283 km pipeline from the North Sea Johan Sverdrup field to the Mongstad complex, where it is stored in caverns and prepared for shipping to markets worldwide.
Once the first development phase reaches peak production, the Mongstad plant is expected to receive up to 440,000 bbl/d of oil from Johan Sverdrup; upon the second phase’s completion in 2022, the amount is expected to rise to 660,000 bbl/d.
When Johan Sverdrup is operating at full capacity, Mongstad will receive more than 30 per cent of the total oil from the Norwegian Continental Shelf.
Equinor Executive Vice President for Marketing, Midstream and Processing Irene Rummelhoff said that this is a great achievement for the Equinor and Johan Sverdrup partnership, which consists of Lundin Norway, Petoro, Aker BP and Total.
“First oil to Mongstad only a few days after production start confirms that the field is producing well,” said Ms Rummelhoff.
“This day also marks the start of a new phase as we prepare to bring Johan Sverdrup oil to the international market.”
The first cargo is expected to leave for Asia-based customers this week, containing one million barrels of oil with a market value of approximately US$60 million.
