Corrosion-prediction software

INTERCORR International, Inc and Technical Toolboxes Inc have signed an agreement launching a new software product for predicting internal corrosion of pipelines called InterCorr Toolbox. This user-friendly, windows-based, software system will be marketed by Technical Toolboxes, who already markets a range of integrated software tools aimed at engineers, scientists, and technicians.

The new software was developed by InterCorr, and is based on a complex numerical-heuristic model to computationally assess internal corrosion for pipeline applications. It includes a sophisticated database module for rigorous corrosion and flow characterization, as well as the capability to easily identify critical areas in a pipeline from an internal corrosion standpoint based on pipeline operating characteristics and topography. InterCorr Toolbox is designed for both onshore and offshore pipelines and provides ready corrosion analysis capabilities across the length of a pipeline. The system generates a graphical profile of the line, showing areas where potential for corrosion exists, and helps in identifying factors that may contribute to such corrosion.

“Internal corrosion prediction is a critical function for pipelines, because of the potential liability of corrosion failures, in terms of financial and loss-of-life ramifications” said Sridhar Srinivasan, IT director for InterCorr International, Inc. “Hitherto, internal corrosion was detected after the fact, which meant substantial loss of revenue and down-time for pipeline operators. With the state-of-the-art engineering technology built into the software, internal corrosion can now be detected and addressed before it becomes a problem”.The InterCorr Toolbox provides the following functions:

  • perform ICDA analysis for pipelines through all type of terrains (hilly, subsea) to identify the problem zones and view predicted corrosion rate profile throughout the pipeline.

  • evaluate various glycol injection scenarios and characterize effectiveness of inhibition.

  • state-of-the-art pH computation module that accounts for the effects of over 16 different anion and cation species.

  • ability to accurately model momentum transfer effects (flow regimes, void fractions, pressure drops and shear stresses) en-route to improved corrosion prediction

  • ability to accurately determine scaling effects due to formation of Iron carbonate and iron sulphide scales as a function of temperature and pH.

  • ability to share data with other Windows-based programs, and generate on-the-fly corrosion and water hold-up profiles for pipelines.
