Prior to the commencement ceremony, CNPC President Jiang Jiemin and Myanmar Oil & Gas Enterprise representative U Myint Hta signed various agreements, including the appointment of CNPC South East Asia as the controlling party of the joint venture to be responsible for the design, construction, operation, expansion and maintenance of the China – Myanmar oil and gas pipelines.
The gas pipeline will traverse a distance of 793 km, while the oil pipeline will be 771 km in length. The China – Myanmar gas pipeline will transport gas from blocks A-1 and A-3 in the Bay of Bengal to mainland China and will have a capacity of 12 MMt/a.
The oil pipeline will provide an alternative route for China’s crude imports from the Middle East and Africa. CNPC started building a crude oil port in November last year on Maday Island, Kyaukphyu Township in Myanmar’s Rakhine state. The port would serve as the starting point of the 240,000 bbl/d oil pipeline.
Both the pipelines will run between Kyaukryu, Myanmar, and terminate at Yunnan Province’s capital city of Kunming.
