Hydrogen Park takes next step

A Siemens 1.25 MW Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyser is currently being installed at AGIG’s Hydrogen Park South Australia (HyP SA) project in the Tonsley Innovations District, south of Adelaide, by Valmec, where it will split water into oxygen and hydrogen gas, producing up to 480 kg/day.

AGIG expects the production of renewable hydrogen to begin in Spring this year, after which the hydrogen will be mingled with natural gas to create a 5 per cent renewable gas blend and fed into more than 700 residences in nearby suburb Mitchell Park.

AGIG CEO Ben Wilson said the project demonstrates Australia’s gas networks are hydrogen ready.

“HyP SA will be an Australian first to eventually deliver renewable hydrogen made from water, sunshine and wind, to homes and businesses through our existing gas network,” he said.

“Importantly, it meets widening community recognition of hydrogen’s benefits, and underlines South Australia’s status as a leader in this emerging industry with real potential to deliver jobs and growth for residential, commercial, industrial and export applications.”

SA Minister for Mining and Energy Dan van Holst Pellekaan said HyP SA was an exciting renewable hydrogen project.

“It will additionally demonstrate the feasibility of blending hydrogen into the broader SA gas network and inform the SA Government’s planning on how we transition to a low-carbon gas distribution network,” he said.

The $11.4 million plant was supported by a $4.9 million grant from the SA Government and AGIG said the facility is an early step in the company’s vision to eventually deliver 100 per cent renewable gas.
