HSE the key for innovative pipeline companies

OSD Pty Ltd Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Adviser Dave McKenzie gave an interesting look at a thoroughly important topic for industry, yet one that is rarely addressed – employee depression and suicide, and the effects it can have on staff morale and a successful project delivery.

Mr McKenzie told the 50-strong crowd that suicides are currently 41 per cent higher than the national road toll, and that Indigenous people are four times more likely to die by suicide than non-Indigenous people.

Mr McKenzie gave a valuable presentation on the costs of depression on pipeline construction sites, and the urgent need to implement this into a pipeline company’s HSE delivery plan.

Other presentations of note included an overview of Nacap’s CodeSafe operation, presented by HSEQ Manager Tony Vervest and HSE Manager Paul Whyte, both of Nacap Australia, and Australia Pacific LNG Project HSE Manager Ray Reeves on the successful delivery of HSE programs during construction of a major project.

Origin Energy Principal Pipeline Engineer Shane Becker, who is also the Editor of the CSG PE Code of Practice, gave an excellent update on the planned June 2014 release of the 3.0 version of the code.

That evening, the approximately 400 attendees at the April Brisbane Dinner heard from Chuck Knecht of QGC, who gave a detailed update on the Queensland Curtis LNG Pipeline Project.

Mr Knecht recently replaced Norman Ingram’s role on the project, and offered excellent insight into one of Australia’s largest pipeline projects.

The seminar was proudly sponsored by McConnell Dowell and Vermeer, and the dinner was sponsored by Enerflex and Fyfe Earth Partners.
