This week, the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment granted formal consent to the $15 million trial project, which includes the production of hydrogen for use in Jemena’s NSW natural gas network.
In its notice of decision, the government said the project “would provide a range of benefits for the region and the state as a whole by enhancing Australia’s renewable capacity”.
A spokesperson for Jemena spokesperson said project is the crucial next step in bringing renewable hydrogen gas into the New South Wales network.
Jemena purchased a 500 kW electrolyser last year that will use solar and wind power to create hydrogen gas.
The installation of this electrolyser is expected to be completed by early 2021.
The approval comes after a company announcement earlier this week, stating hydrogen from the project would also be used to supply a vehicle refuelling station at Hyundai’s Macquarie Park headquarters from early 2021.
Coregas will provide hydrogen compression installation, pipework and connectors for filling and discharging, as well as hydrogen packaging, transportation and quality control services.
