Addressing the second day of the annual Australian Pipelines and Gas Association (APGA) Convention and Exhibition on the Gold Coast, DBP General Manager Maintenance James Smith said the adoption of the company’s The Perfect Sayinitiative had produced very positive results.
“Before that, because of the experience of our many long-serving employees, our DBP leaders had cause to believe that they were well connected with what goes on at an operational level across our expansive workplace,” Mr Smith said.
“We then asked ourselves a series of questions on activities in our own back yard, including; How well do we really know our people, and how well do we know our processes, not on paper, but in practice.
“What we identified was an issue regarding management line of sight which we then attributed to a shortfall in meaningful safety leadership engagement capable of reaching out across our vast and often remote workplace.
“This in turn led to the birth of The Perfect Say and the establishment of a relaxed working environment which fosters an open dialogue between a senior leader (from supervisor through to general manager) engaging with an individual in their own work environment, on work relevant to that individual.”
Mr Smith said the quality and context of management engagement is a component of employee consultation that is often overlooked.
“Engagement between senior leaders and individual employees in this way helps reinforce the fact that the company cares for each and every worker’s health and safety,” he said.
DBP owns Australia’s largest gas transmission pipeline – the 1,600 km Dampier to Bunbury Gas Pipeline in Western Australia.
The APGA Convention and Exhibition will see pipeline industry professionals from around Australia and overseas assembled for four days of networking and information sharing from 17-20 October.
More than 600 pipelines and gas industry people will attend with around 100 exhibitors showcasing their products and information over 134 exhibition stands at the event.
