Give me a donga among the Gum Trees

The pipeliners from Brisbane-based constructor GD Pipelines certainly feel at home in a donga among the gum trees. Life onsite creates a culture of mateship – everyone looks out for each other and the nicknames and the jibes are all delivered with great humour.

From its Brisbane home, GD Pipelines has positioned itself as a key player in the coal seam gas (CSG) industry. The end-to-end construction company – which specialises in a number of disciplines including pipeline construction, gas and water systems, civil works, slurry lines and roads – aims to be in the market for the long haul.

GD Pipelines Managing Director Mark Greene said “To deliver innovative, cost-effective construction solutions and be fully compliant without incident requires the development of a new generation construction company. GD Pipelines has constructed its company and project teams to align with this requirement.

“The company’s mission to be the leading, self-managed, fully-compliant end-to-end pipeline constructor embodies these principles. With experienced and well-trained people working to proven and tailored project execution systems, we can deliver what at times seems impossible.”

These sorts of achievements make the whole team proud and develop a culture GD Pipelines wants to encourage.

“Our teams work extremely hard, so it’s important that we take time out to celebrate success along the way,” Mr Greene said.

He also added “We are incredibly well-placed to seize opportunities in the CSG segment. This is a pinnacle time for pipelines in Australia, particularly in Queensland. While CSG has been around for a long time, the demand metrics now make it a valuable commodity.”

GD Business Development Manager Craig Stanley said “A combination of a fresh management team plus experienced staff on its Surat and Bowen basin worksites is a recipe for success.

“We are taking a clear look at the business now and establishing the framework for GD Pipelines to take on more work without dropping our service levels of performance or safety.”

GD Chief Financial Officer Neil Federer likened GD to an adolescent which has matured into a “fine young adult”.

“The business has a real focus on people and what they do. Our Brisbane-based people must go to site every quarter to understand what it’s like to get up at 4am, be living in a donga among the gum trees and to be standing in a paddock for the pre-start,” said Mr Federer.

“It’s not a typical construction company anymore, it’s become more than that.”
