Giles expects Labor and Greens scare campaign over NEGI

Speaking at the Northern Territory (NT) Major Projects Conference, Mr Giles said: “You can expect a large scare campaign from Labor and the kooky Greens to try and stop it. Scare campaigns are just part of the process these days.”

However, NT Opposition Leader Michael Gunner said that Labor will support the proposed pipeline, and that Mr Giles was wrong to suggest otherwise.

“Labor supports the pipeline, we’ve made that very clear. I don’t know why Adam Giles would get that wrong today, but we are used to Adam Giles getting things wrong,” said Mr Gunner.

Despite the political manoeuvring, Mr Giles outlined that the NEGI will bring major benefits the region.

“The pipeline will be a game changer for the Northern Territory. It will create jobs, economic security and investment that will lead us until the middle of this century,” said Mr Giles.

Other projects underway in the Territory, including the INPEX Ichthys LNG Project, Conoco Phillips’ Darwin LNG Facility, Shell’s Prelude FLNG Project and Santos’ Bonaparte Gulf development were also mentioned by Mr Giles as further examples of booming energy investment in the NT.

“We estimate that those four gas projects will alone could amount to over $40 billion worth of investment into the Territory, generating over 10,000 jobs during construction,” said Mr Giles.

Keeping up with the developments in the Territory, newly appointed Minister for Northern Australia Josh Frydenberg will meet with Mr Giles on his first trip to the region since receiving the portfolio, with energy infrastructure one of the key discussion topics.

Mr Frydenberg will pay a visit INPEX’s Ichthys LNG Gas Project near Darwin, and will also address the NT Chamber of Commerce where he is expected to outline the importance of infrastructure and the development of the NT’s gas resources, and their importance to national energy supply through the proposed NEGI pipeline.
