Gas support could benefit Hunter pipeline

The proposed pipeline would run 825 km from the Wallumbilla gas hub in Queensland to the Hunter Valley in New South Wales, north of Newcastle.

Despite approval from the NSW Minister for Planning in 2009, development on the pipeline has yet to begin, although the project was granted five more years to commence construction in October 2019.

The Australian Financial Review is now reporting backers of the HGP believe the National COVID-19 Co-ordination Commission’s recommendation for a gas-led economic recovery has resulted in an uptick in interest in the project in recent weeks.

HGP Managing Director Garbis Simonian told the publication policy had now changed in a way that supported the pipeline, and the project’s proponents were holding discussions with government to help secure gas transportation agreements.

Although the pipeline could transport gas from Santos’ Narrabri Gas Project, Mr Simonian said the HGP did not rely on that project gaining approval.
