In March 2008, Fyfe acquired the Northern Territory survey company J Matthews and Associates. The company is now known as Fyfe JMA. Since the acquisition, Fyfe JMA has increased staff numbers from six to fourteen, while turnover has almost trebled on the back of major gas projects, land development and civil contracts. The rapid growth has already resulted in Fyfe JMA moving to new accommodation in Mitchell Street, Darwin in late October, with predictions of further expansion in the coming months.
J Matthews and Associates has been working in the Northern Territory for more than 25 years and Fyfe is pleased to have acquired the company and see it expand in such a short period of time.
A great deal of the recent expansion is due to Fyfe JMA’s involvement in major projects like the Blacktip gas supply project. Fyfe JMA provided survey services to the lead contractor MacMahon Contractors for Blacktip, an important project to the Northern Territory. The Eni Australia Blacktip project transports gas from the Timor Sea to Wadeye and then on to the Weddell Power Station. The pipeline will also extend to a new property subdivision near Palmeston, the Royal Darwin Hospital and a new gas plant near Darwin.
Fyfe JMA is pleased to be involved in the development of this very important project, including the survey work for the 13 km road to the gas processing plant, set out for the plant, survey of the road to the beach and easement surveys for the project.
Darwin is emerging as a key growth centre for national surveying and engineering firm Fyfe. Fyfe JMA Practice Manager Warwick Bryant said that the economic development taking place in the Northern Territory showed no signs of slowing, with the biggest concern for Fyfe being a lack of appropriately trained staff. This shortage is being covered at present using staff from Fyfe’s other offices in Adelaide and Brisbane on a fly-in, fly-out basis.
Fyfe Managing Director Mark Dayman said that Darwin had become a major focus for the company because of major gas projects like Blacktip and the Inpex LNG project.
