Further funding promised for Barraba water pipeline

Nationals candidate for the seat of Tamworth, Kevin Anderson, said that the New South Wales Coalition believes the approximately 25 km pipeline is “vital” for the region.

The funding commitment represents one third of the estimated cost of the project, and is dependent upon the Federal Government and the Tamworth Regional Council each contributing the remaining two thirds of the project cost.

“We will work closely with Tamworth Regional Council in all stages of the planning and delivery process to ensure that this project is delivered and completed as promised to the Barraba community,” Mr Anderson said.

“The project will commence as soon as possible, because the time for waiting is over.”

In addition, Barraba Community Development Committee Secretary Paula McIver has told PPO News that the Tamworth Regional Council is considering a report from consultants Sinclair Knight Merz on the impact of a water bore testing program in Barraba.

The council is investigating the potential for bore water to supply the town, as an alternative to building the proposed pipeline from Split Rock Dam.

Ms McIver said that the Barraba community supports the proposed pipeline project, and wishes to see it move ahead.

A feasibility study by the Tamworth Regional Council into the pipeline project is due for completion in June 2011, and Ms McIver said that the council is close to confirming a preferred pipeline route as well as estimated project costs.
