EnergyQuest: coronavirus impacting LNG

The energy analyst’s March quarterly report said while February deliveries were lower than the previous month, Australia’s LNG exports have been largely unaffected by the outbreak of Covid-19, known as coronavirus.

However, EnergyQuest said “there is no doubt” the virus is “adding to the woes of LNG”, with new projects suffering from travel restrictions.

Woodside’s Scarborough project and Santos’ Barossa development both had progress slowed by travel conditions and the companies have seen a drop in share prices.

EnergyQuest said coronavirus was likely to “hang over the energy sector for most of this year.”

Australia exported 77.3 Mt of LNG in 2019 to become the world’s largest producer, 22.4 Mt of which was from Queensland.

Gas-fired generation also rose 15.6 per cent in 2019 to 18 TWh.
