Selecting the right coating system is a critical part of any pipeline project, but it does not guarantee long-term performance on its own. Durable protection depends just as much on surface preparation, application quality, inspection discipline, and consistent execution across every stage of delivery.
When coating performance is discussed, much of the attention naturally centres on system selection. Service environment, operating conditions, design life, construction methodology, and project-specific requirements all need to be assessed carefully before a coating system is specified. That process is essential.
However, selecting the right coating system is only half the job.
A technically suitable coating can still underperform if execution is poor. Across pipeline projects, there are many examples where the chosen system was appropriate, the specification was sound, and the intended performance requirements were clear, yet the final outcome was compromised by rushed surface preparation, contamination, poor environmental control, inconsistent application, shortened curing times, or inadequate inspection.
In these situations, the issue is often not the coating itself. More commonly, the problem lies in how the system was delivered.

This remains one of the more persistent misunderstandings in the industry. Once a coating product has been selected and approved, there can be a tendency to assume the major coating risk has been addressed. In reality, specification is only the starting point. Long-term performance still depends on whether the coating system is given the conditions and controls required to succeed.
Coatings are unforgiving when the fundamentals are not managed properly. Surfaces must be prepared to the specified standard. Substrates need to be clean and correctly profiled. Environmental conditions must remain within allowable limits. Application must follow approved procedures. Cure requirements need to be respected. Inspection hold points must be maintained. Repairs must be completed to the same standard as the original application.
If these controls begin to weaken, even a well-selected coating system can be set up to fail prematurely.
This is especially relevant on pipeline projects, where coating quality is influenced by multiple stages of the delivery chain. Quality does not begin and end at the coating plant. It is affected by transport, storage, handling, stringing, welding, field joint coating, repair work, and lowering-in activities. Every step has the potential to either preserve coating integrity or introduce risk.
A coating system may be correct on paper, but if quality slips during execution, exposure begins to build long before the line is placed into service.
That is why project delivery deserves just as much focus as product selection.
On many projects, once the coating system has been approved, attention quickly shifts to production targets, schedule pressure, and construction progress. This is often the point where coating quality becomes more vulnerable. The challenge is no longer deciding what should be applied. The challenge is ensuring it is applied correctly, consistently, and under real site conditions.
That is where strong QA/QC oversight becomes critical.
Trust the process, control the basics
Effective inspection is not there to slow progress. Its role is to ensure the selected coating system is actually being delivered in a way that allows it to perform over the long term. That means maintaining discipline around preparation standards, contamination control, environmental monitoring, application parameters, cure verification, inspection acceptance criteria, and repair quality. These are not administrative details. They are the practical controls that determine whether a coating will provide durable protection or simply appear acceptable at handover.
Many coating failures begin with small compromises that seem manageable at the time. A surface that is almost to standard. A contaminated area accepted to keep work moving. A cure period reduced to protect programme. A repair completed for convenience rather than quality. On the day, these decisions may appear minor. Over time, they can undermine a coating system that was otherwise correctly selected and correctly specified.
For this reason, coating performance should always be viewed as a full process rather than a simple product choice.
For asset owners, this means recognising that coating protection depends on more than what is written into the specification. It depends on factors such as planning, workmanship, supervision, verification, and quality discipline throughout construction.
For contractors, it means understanding that coating performance is maintained in the field, not just in technical data sheets or product approvals.
For both parties, the objective should be the same: not just coating application, but reliable long-term performance in service.
Some of the strongest coating outcomes in the industry are not necessarily associated with the most complex or highest-profile systems. They are often achieved on projects where the basics were controlled properly from start to finish. The coating product mattered, but so did the people applying it, the procedures governing the work, the inspection regime supporting it, and the overall quality culture surrounding delivery.
That is where the real difference is made.

A coating system should not be judged solely by what is written in the specification or promised in a product brochure. It should ultimately be judged by how well it performs once the asset is operating.
Choosing the right coating system is an important first step. But it is only the beginning.
Long-term coating performance comes from pairing the right system with the right preparation, application, inspection, and workmanship. Without that, even the best specification can be reduced to good intent on paper.
