The company will provide overall electrical power systems (EPS) for the project, both topside and subsea.
This subsea compression technology significantly reduces power consumption and emissions compared to power generated offshore by local gas turbines and compressors located topside.
This will enable the transition to clean-burning natural gas across the Asia Pacific region.
The project will combine two core ABB technologies – power from shore and Variable Speed Drive (VSD) subsea power – for the first time ever.
The Jansz-Io field is located around 200 km offshore the north-western coast of Australia, at water depths of approximately 1,400 m.
The field is a part of the Chevron-operated Gorgon natural gas project – one of the world’s largest natural gas developments.

“The Jansz-Io Compression project is a major enabler in maintaining an important source of natural gas to customers in Asia Pacific,” he said.

Burning natural gas produces around half as much carbon dioxide per unit of energy compared with coal, and Mr Terwiesch hopes the project will bring the country closer to a carbon neutral future.

ABB President for Energy Industries Brandon Spencer said subsea compressors are key to helping improve reservoir recoverability and ensuring optimal use of resources from existing fields.
Work on the Jansz-lo compression project is due to commence immediately.
