240 workers evacuated from fire in Queensland pipeline camp

The crew, who are currently working on the Comet Ridge to Wallumbilla Pipeline Looping Project, were safely evacuated and transported to an alternative camp.

A Murphy Pipe and Civil spokesperson told PPO News that the exact cause of the fire is currently being investigated, but confirmed it had started within the kitchen area of the camp.

“While a fire is an unfortunate incident, the fact that in the middle of the night, and after a 12 hour shift of hard work, more than 240 people were able to be safely evacuated from their individual rooms and into a safe location without any injury, showed the camp’s emergency evacuation plans were fit for purpose and implemented in a professional manner,” the spokesperson said.

The looping project involves a 600 mm welded steel gas pipeline being developed by Santos to provide additional capacity to its existing pipeline system located between Comet Ridge and Wallumbilla.

Once constructed, the pipeline system will enable increased transportation of CSG to a liquefaction facility in Gladstone.

A peak workforce of 310 will be used to construct the pipeline, with project completion expected by November 2014.
