Machinery and equipment

A range of machinery and equipment is involved in the construction of a pipeline. These can range from 4x4 trucks and hand radios to more specialised equipment such as pipelayers and sidebooms.

Some of the large machinery used for pipeline construction includes:
  • Trenchers and ploughs – used to dig the ditch in which a pipe is laid;
  • Earthmoving equipment and excavators – often required to remove dirt and tough materials such as rock;
  • Pipelayers and sidebooms – used to lower the pipe into the trench;
  • Padding machines – used to place soft, sifted soil around the pipeline to protect the pipeline coating from damage.

Auxiliary equipment can be added to this machinery for additional function. For example, buckets can be attached to excavators and used for padding.

Welding systems are also required for pipeline construction, with pipe bevelling equipment used to prepare the pipe connection.
