Engineering and design

During the engineering and design stage of a pipeline, the specifics of the pipeline are determined. Before detailed design occurs, conceptual development, engineering and design of the project is conducted in a stage referred to as front-end engineering and design.

Some of the important aspects considered during engineering and design include:
  • Optimal route;
  • Potential challenges and how they can be overcome;
  • Risk management;
  • Safety precautions;
  • Appropriate specifications for line pipe, considering pipeline location and product;
  • Complying to relevant standards; and,
  • How to complete the project on time and within budget.

It is not uncommon for the company who undertakes the engineering and design of the pipeline to also procure the materials and construct the project as part of an engineering, procurement and construction contract.
