Glassmetal Industries has been manufacturing enamelled signs for over 100 years. The company has grown with the pipeline and utility industries, understanding and catering to the industries’ needs.
Recognised as one of the most durable surfaces, vitreous enamel has a proven long term record in hostile and aggressive environments. Applications vary widely, but it is used extensively as exterior signage in exposed sites subject to all weather conditions.
Pipelines are laid in some of the most inhospitable environments in Australia. Even in the most hostile environments, enamelled signs will retain their integrity, longer than any other sign medium. Glassmetal Industries’ 30-year legibility guarantee gives pipeline operators the peace of mind that the signs they erect will continue to protect their assets for many years, also saving the considerable cost of replacing illegible signs.
One of the major advantages of the enamelling process is that it allows an image to be printed and fused onto the under laying enamelled surface. At high temperature a physical bond takes place. This results in a sign that can be situated in the most hostile conditions, and which will easily outlast any other sign type.

Other advantages enamel has over other sign types is it is resistant to chemicals, and can withstand extremes in temperatures. Graffiti can be removed without damaging the surface and it will not scratch. Vitreous enamel is also salt resistant.
What makes vitreous enamel, also known as porcelain enamel, so effective is that it is an inorganic glass coating bonded to steel at temperatures of around 800°C. This fusing of steel and glass results in a durable, smoothly coated product which is extremely durable – “It has the hardness of glass and the strength of steel.”
With advances in technology and the chemical composition of the frit, bonding and the durability of colours have been improved greatly.
