Since the start of the project in November 2010, Sargent has supplied 9 on-road and 180 off-road vehicles, and this will continue until the project’s completion in 2014.
The Mitsubishi Triton and the Toyota Prado, vehicles of choice for the project, were fitted with electronic stability control and side-curtain airbags. These additional safety options were specifically requested by Queensland Curtis LNG (QCLNG) owners, British Gas and the Queensland Gas Corporation. Some of the Prado vehicles have also been fitted with the latest roll-over-protection system, HALO.
HALO was designed and supplied by US-based company Safety Engineering International, and is unique due to its external fixtures. This means it doesn’t interfere with other safety devices such as side-curtain airbags or take up cab space. In fact, it does not significantly modify the vehicle in any way.
Sargent National Sales and Marketing Manager Grant Harrison said “We worked with our clients to ensure safety needs were addressed as a priority for this project. With harsh road conditions in this area of Queensland, it’s easy for things to go wrong, so we made sure the vehicles were maintained to the highest standards and fitted with the latest safety equipment.”

Sargent is supplying onsite mechanical maintenance and servicing for all vehicles on the QCLNG Project, and sees reliability as equally important. Full-time mechanics ensure Sargent vehicles are fit for use and have minimum down-time. The onsite workshop is equipped to repair and maintain all vehicles, removing the need for travel on this time-sensitive project.
In light of this time pressure on projects such as the QCLNG, Sargent worked in partnership with the McConnell Dowell and Consolidated Contractors Company team to ensure vehicles were available onsite as soon as the project began.
Sargent continues to focus on products which provide the latest in vehicle safety equipment, and is currently looking at including other manufacturers in the fleet such as Volkswagen, Ford and Nissan, who are currently developing new safety features for their vehicles. This is in line with Sargent’s commitment to APIA safety standards.
