The Carpentaria Gas Pipeline runs from Ballera Gas Plant to Mount Isa and includes several offtakes, including to Cannington Mine and Phosphate Hill.
The pipeline traverses the Channel Country of far west Queensland. Particular challenges are evident in the area, making corrosion survey by helicopter a necessity to cover the required distances and geography in an expedient manner.
The Channel Country is a series of ancient flood plains with rivers that flow intermittently including the Cooper Creek and Diamantina River.

APA Group selected Savcor to undertake the corrosion surveying, which included:
- Synchronised ON/OFF potential surveying utilising ‘zero-drift’ global positioning system current interrupters;
- Surge protection and isolation protection breakdown voltage testing;
- Pipeline earthing suitability;
- Interval datalogging to monitor for excursions due to induced voltages and telluric/geomagnetic effects; and,
- Loop resistance testing of impressed current cathodic protection units.
Savcor said that it is looking forward to extending its award winning, accredited surveying services to its valued clients, present and future.
