Founded by Frank Winslow in Cremorne Street, Richmond on 24 October 1958, the company has now seen three generations of the family involved in the business.
The company began as a manufacturer of steel fabrications for buildings. However, after purchasing a materials handling manufacturer in 1961, the business began to make hydraulic lifting equipment. The change was based on Mr Winslow’s determination and strong belief in the fact that he could develop the business further through diversification. This decision marked the beginning of the transformation of Richmond Wheel & Castors, from a steel fabricator into a symbol of Australian materials handling.
The company moved to its current headquarters in Clayton in 1963. Over the next decade, the steel and engineering businesses became increasingly profitable, with the wheel and castor component growing significantly.
In 1972, the current CEO Ray Winslow joined Richmond Engineering. From the outset, he made the expansion of the company’s manufacturing capacity and product development one of his key goals.

By 1982, the wheels and castors part of the company had become extremely successful and increasingly became the primary focus. During 1987, when Frank Winslow retired, the entire Clayton site was taken over by the wheel and castor business, which was now known as Richmond Wheel & Castors Co.
1997 marked the beginning of the company’s expansion into the Australian market. The opening of the Sydney branch heralded further diversification for the company, as warehousing and sales facilities were added to their list of services. It was around this time that the decision was made to make Richmond Wheels & Castors Australia’s foremost LiftnMove store.
Since its early beginnings, Richmond has been recognised for its skill in catering to the needs of special materials handling, from design to manufacturing. Richmond has thrived due to its commitment to customer service, and its capacity to meet a wide variety of industry needs. The ability to continually evolve as a company has also been instrumental in Richmond’s longevity.
Richmond currently has business operations in every Australian state, as well as a branch in Auckland, New Zealand.
